He received the 2010 Bronze Boot, the 2010 Silver Ball, was named to the tournament teams for Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup, and was named man of the match in six of the eleven games played by the Oranje during these two tournaments.
He is the most capped Dutch player of all time, with 134 appearances. In March 2018, he announced his international retirement. Because of his position as the most capped player, he was granted a farewell match against Peru on September 6, 2018.
