He was born on April 18, 1944, and passed away on June 5, 2023, at the age of 79.

Three years after joining the FBI, Hanssen approached the Soviet Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) and offered his services, kicking off his first espionage cycle that lasted until 1981.

He resumed his espionage activities in 1985 and continued until 1991 when he cut off connections during the Soviet Union’s demise for fear of being revealed.

He remained unidentified to the Soviets during his surveillance.

The Department of Justice called his spying “possibly the worst intelligence disaster in U.S. history.”
