Omegle was a popular online chat platform that connected random individuals for virtual video and text conversations. It was founded in 2009 by Leif K-Brooks, who wanted to create a website that would allow people to meet new friends from all over the world.

Omegle claimed to have millions of daily users, and its videos were often shared on social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok. However, Omegle also faced a lot of criticism and controversy for becoming a breeding ground for child abuse and exploitation.

The platform was accused of pairing minors with sexual predators, and of facilitating the distribution of child pornography. Omegle was mentioned in more than 50 cases against pedophiles in the last two years, according to the BBC.

Omegle also settled a lawsuit that alleged that it matched an 11-year-old user with a sexual predator in 2021. As a result of these allegations and legal troubles, Omegle decided to shut down its operations in November 2023.

K-Brooks announced the site’s closure in a lengthy statement, saying that operating Omegle was no longer sustainable, financially nor psychologically. He apologized to the users who used Omegle for positive purposes, and thanked them for their support.
