The National Hockey League (NHL) is not only famous for the action on the ice but also for its strict and well-defined rules and regulations off the rink.

One such rule that holds significant importance and is enforced rigorously is the league’s stance on gambling.

The NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) serves as the cornerstone of the league’s regulations. This agreement explicitly states that “gambling on any NHL game is prohibited.”

To ensure that this rule is communicated clearly to everyone involved in the league, it is posted prominently in every dressing room across the NHL.

In addition to the CBA, the NHL’s constitution, a comprehensive document covering various aspects of the league, including club ownership regulations and the powers of the commissioner, reiterates this strict stance against gambling on NHL games.

However, it is essential to note that while the NHL maintains a strict prohibition on gambling concerning its own games, players and individuals working for NHL teams or the league are allowed to bet on non-NHL events.

This distinction reflects the league’s commitment to maintaining the integrity and fairness of its games and ensuring that players, officials, and other league personnel are not involved in activities that could compromise the game’s credibility.

In cases where individuals breach the NHL’s gambling regulations, Commissioner Gary Bettman is empowered by the CBA to impose disciplinary actions. The CBA clearly outlines the three forms of punishment that may be imposed by the commissioner: Fining a Player, Canceling a Player’s Contract and Expulsion or Suspension

The CBA provides the commissioner with the authority to enforce this action for a “definite or indefinite period.” These strict rules and regulations regarding gambling are essential in upholding the integrity of the NHL and its games.
