What is Terry Allen known for?

The Southwest has been as an inspiration for Terry Allen, an artist and musician, for more than 50 years. Allen, who is now in his seventy-eighties, invokes the vast expanses of deserted highways, run-down motels, and neon-lit bars in the area, as well as the bank robbers, ex-football players, and small-town loner residents who dwell them. His body of work includes albums, installations, radio plays, and drawings. Always lurking beneath the surface is the potential for romance or violence.

Allen grew up in Lubbock working as a soda salesman at the dance hall his father, a former baseball player who now organizes events, ran. It was there that he first heard Hank Williams and Little Richard. He socialized with surrealists and made friends with Ed Ruscha while attending art school in Los Angeles in the 1960s.
