Shai was born on July 12, 1998, in Toronto but grew up in Ontario. He played high school basketball for St. Thomas More junior team and played one season college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats.

As an high school student, he won the team MVP and the midget boys’ city championship, and averaged 18.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists
