Oskar was known for creating sound effects on a musical instrument known as a trautonium, which transformed the worlds of radio, film, and television.

Between 1932 and 1935, Sala studied physics at the University of Berlin. He contributed to the development of the “Volkstrautonium,” a Trautonium that Telefunken hoped to popularise.

Sala expanded the Trautonium into the Mixtur-Trautonium in 1948. Sala’s discovery opened up the field of subharmonics, the symmetric counterpart to overtones, allowing for the evolution of a completely distinct tuning.

Sala unveiled his new instrument to the public in 1952, and its circuits were soon licenced internationally. Harald Genzmer wrote the score for the first Concert For Mixtur-Trautonium the same year.

Sala died on February 26, 2002, in Berlin, Germany, at the age of 92. He died of a health problem, according to the official report.
