The gala is held on the first Monday of May each year. It marks the start of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

Many of the invitees have appeared on the covers and pages of Vogue. The guest list has expanded to include celebrities from business, politics, and theatre.

American journalist and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has chaired or co-chaired the Met Gala.
