The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, built between 1984 and 1995, is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant and the world’s eighth-largest. It features six reactors, each generating 950MW, for a total output of 5,700MW, or enough energy to power almost 4 million homes.

In normal times, it generates one-fifth of Ukraine’s electricity and nearly half of the energy produced by the country’s nuclear power plants.
The facility is located in Enerhodar, Ukraine, on the banks of the Dnieper River’s Kakhovka reservoir. It is around 200 kilometres from the contested Donbas region and 550 kilometres southeast of Kyiv.

Russia has already taken control of the abandoned Chernobyl nuclear power station, which is located 100 kilometres north of Kyiv. According to some analysts, the Zaporizhzhia facility is of a different and safer type than Chernobyl, the location of the world’s worst nuclear tragedy in 1986.
According to Tony Irwin, an honorary associate professor at the Australian National University, the possibilities of an explosion, nuclear meltdown, or radioactive discharge are low.
