Sheppard, an English Hall of Fame trainer in American Thoroughbred horse racing, had developed since his birth to become a successful individual.

According to records, he had 1,242 victories, making him the most successful trainer in American steeplechase racing history. Sheppard has also had a lot of success in flat racing in addition to steeplechase competition. He has a history of working with George W. Strawbridge Jr., the owner of his stable, in both venues, and in 2008, he trained Forever Together, a filly owned by Strawbridge, to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Fans of Saratoga racing will most likely remember Sheppard as the jockey who, from 1970 through 2015, won at least one race there every year. To honor the record holder, the Grade I steeplechase formerly known as the N.Y. Turf Writers Handicap was renamed the Jonathan Sheppard in 2021.
