Kay was born in East Prussia, Germany, and moved to Canada with his family in 1958. He began his musical career in the early 1960s, playing in various bands in Toronto. In 1967, he formed Steppenwolf with guitarist Michael Monarch, bassist Rushton Moreve, drummer Jerry Edmonton, and keyboardist Goldy McJohn.

Steppenwolf quickly became one of the most popular rock bands in the world, thanks to their hard-driving sound and Kay’s charismatic stage presence. They released a string of hit albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including “Monster”, “At War with the World”, and “Steppenwolf 7.”

Kay left Steppenwolf in 1971 to pursue a solo career. He released several solo albums in the 1970s and 1980s, but he never achieved the same level of success as he did with Steppenwolf. Kay rejoined Steppenwolf in 1980, and the band has continued to tour and record ever since. They released their most recent album, “Resurrection”, in 2017.
