Jack Sonni, who was best known as “the other guitarist” in Dire Straits during the band’s Brothers in Arms period, was an American writer, musician, and marketing professional who died on August 30, 2023.

After graduating, keyboardist Michael Holmes, an Eastman alumnus and bandmate of Tony Levin and Steve Gadd, introduced Sonni to New York session guitarist Elliott Randall (renowned for his solo on the hit song “Reelin’ In the Years”).

Sonni was persuaded to go to NYC and start his profession by Randall, who later served as his mentor and tutor. Jack stayed in NYC from 1976 to 1985. He initially tried to break into the session scene but eventually shifted his attention to his own band.
