Groundhog Day is a tradition observed in the United States and Canada on February 2 of every year. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow, it will retreat to its den and winter will go on for six more weeks; if it does not see its shadow, spring will arrive early.

Groundhog Day is also the title of a 1993 comedy film starring Bill Murray as Phil Connors, a cynical weatherman who is sent to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. However, he finds himself trapped in a time loop, forcing him to relive February 2 over and over again.

The film does not explain how or why Phil gets stuck in the time loop, nor how long he stays there. However, some estimates have been made based on the events and activities shown in the film. Phil spends 8 years, 8 months, and 16 days in the time loop. Another estimate puts the number at 12,403 days or about 34 years.

Regardless of the exact duration, Phil eventually learns to use his time loop as an opportunity to improve himself and his relationships with others. He becomes more compassionate, generous, skilled, and happy. He also falls in love with his producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) and wins her heart. By the end of the film, Phil breaks the time loop and wakes up on February 3 with Rita by his side.
