Dawes competed for the United States from 1989 to 2000, and became the U.S. all-around senior National Champion in 1994.
She was also the first African American woman to win an individual Olympic gymnastics medal, earning a bronze in the floor exercise at the 1996 Games.
The three-time Olympian retired from competitive gymnastics in 2000.
Upon retirement, Dawes remains active in the gymnastics community as a coach, and commentator.
