Mutombo later retired with a career record of 11,729 points scored, 12,359 rebounds and 3,289 blocks.
He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015.
Mutombo launched into media and film in 2002, making a brief appearance in the films Juwanna Mann and Like Mike.
He went on to appear in various TV commercials as well, including the Mobil 1 “Don’t change your oil” advert, in which he starred with Kevin Harvick.
