What illness does Bono have?

Bono is a singer-songwriter, activist, and philanthropist from Ireland. Bono suffers from glaucoma.

Because he suffers from glaucoma, Bono is almost never seen without sunglasses. During an interview with Rolling Stone, he stated:

I have very sensitive eyes to light. If somebody takes my photograph, I will see the flash for the rest of the day. My right eye swells up. I’ve a blockage there, so that my eyes go red a lot. So it’s part vanity, it’s part privacy and part sensitivity.

In May 2010, while preparing for a U2 tour, Bono suffered a spinal injury and was taken to a German clinic in Munich for emergency neurosurgery. The North American leg of the tour was postponed and rescheduled for 2011.

Aside from music, Bono is a social justice activist, both through U2 and as an individual. He is especially active in campaigning for Africa, where he co-founded DATA, EDUN, the ONE Campaign, and Product Red.

In 2007, Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom awarded him an honorary knighthood for “services to the music industry and humanitarian work,” and he was made a Commandeur of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters).
