However, the specific details regarding the stage or progression of her lung cancer, as well as any other relevant information about her illness, have not been extensively publicized. Donna Summer passed away on May 17, 2012, at the age of 63. Her death was attributed to lung cancer-related complications.

Donna Summer, a nonsmoker, hypothesised that her cancer was caused by inhaling toxic fumes and dust from the September 11 attacks in New York City; she was in her flat near Ground Zero at the time.

Some reports, however, attribute Summer’s cancer to her smoking in her younger years, her continued exposure to second-hand smoking while performing in clubs long after she had quit, and a family history of this disease.

Donna Summer’s funeral was held on the afternoon of May 23, 2012, at Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee. She was laid to rest in Nashville’s Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens cemetery.

Fans paid their respects to Summer by leaving flowers and mementos on her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. According to Nielsen SoundScan, her album sales increased by 3,277% a few days after her death. Summer sold about 1,000 albums in the week before she died, according to Billboard magazine. That number rose to 26,000 after her death.
