Cancemi had admitted to the crime during a trial in 1993.

Who Was Tommaso Buscetta?

Tommaso Buscetta was a criminal mobster and a member of the Sicilian Mafia, who became one of the first of its members to expose the deep secrets of the organization.

Known as “the boss of two worlds”, Buscetta led criminal gangs in Italy, the United States and Brazil before he was arrested and put behind bars in Italy.

He later fell apart with the Mafia after they killed no less than eleven members of his family, including his two sons, son-in-law, nephew and closest brother.

In 1984, Buscetta began to work with the authorities, and provided in-depth information about the mafia, and even testified at the 1986/87 Maxi Trial, the largest anti-Mafia trial in history.

Following the trial, the judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were murdered, but Buscetta continued to testify to the Antimafia Commission and exposing Italian politicians who were members of the Mafia.

For fear of being killed, Buscetta’s family lived under false names before and after his death.

Buscetta had died of cancer on April 2, 2000. He was aged 71.

Buscetta was portrayed in the 2019 film The Traitor, and in the documentary Our Godfather.

The documentary features an onscreen testimony by Buscetta’s third wife and surviving children.
