McDonnell went missing on Nov. 4 after embarking on a bike ride in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Subsequently, his bike was discovered in Queens at Fort Tilden Beach. On Nov. 17, authorities found a dismembered body on Breezy Point Beach, not far from Fort Tilden. The recovered remains consisted of only a torso and legs, with no head or arms found.
The cause of McDonnell’s death is yet to be determined. However, sources cited by NBC News indicate that there is no indication of foul play or suicide. Authorities suspect that McDonnell went for a swim and tragically drowned. According to a police source mentioned by New York Daily News, it is believed that tides, rocks, and marine life dismembered the body over two weeks before washing ashore. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities collaborating with the Irish consulate and awaiting DNA results.
Ross McDonnell earned acclaim for his cinematography work, winning two Emmy Awards for his contributions to the Showtime documentary “The Trade” and the National Geographic COVID-19 documentary “The First Wave.” Additionally, he received an Emmy nomination for the documentary “Elián,” a collaboration with Tim Golden exploring the story of Elián González.
