Roel Degamo, a Filipino politician who was the governor of the province of Negros Oriental since 2011 was assassinated on March 4, 2023, by unknown assailants.

Roel Degamo was ambushed at his home in Pamplona, Negros Oriental, on March 4, 2023, at approximately 9:36 a.m. by unidentified men.
According to the Police Regional Office (PRO)-Central Visayas, he was ambushed while distributing aid to local Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries.

Roel Degamo was rushed to Dumaguete’s Silliman University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:41 a.m., according to his wife, Pamplona Mayor Janice Degamo.

Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr., of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), condemned the “senseless assassination” of Gov. Degamo.
Abalos stated that he has directed the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct hot pursuit operations in order to apprehend the suspects responsible for this crime as soon as possible.
In a statement on Saturday, March 4 2023, afternoon, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. condemned the “dastardly and heinous crime,” saying his government will not rest until the suspects were brought to justice.
