The 86-year-old religious leader presided over his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday morning (March 29, 2023).

In 2021, he underwent surgery to treat a colon problem, however, the condition returned in January 2023. That same month, he led the funeral of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, who was the first pope to step down willingly in centuries. His resignation was due to issues relating to his health.

Pope Francis also shared that if his health keeps declining, he might follow in the footsteps of Pope Benedict and resign.
