He played 12 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). However, his career was plagued by injuries.

Byron played through hip pain for several years before being forced to miss nine games during the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season.

He was placed on waivers three times during the 2025 season, ostensibly to save money under the salary cap, according to the team.

Byron received a cortisone injection, allowing him to participate in the final two regular-season games and the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Canadiens went on to lose the next three games of the series and were on the verge of elimination when Byron’s hip pain returned.

After the Finals, Byron chose to have left hip surgery and will miss the first part of the 2021-22 season. After his return, he played twenty-five games, being sidelined three times due to subsequent injuries, much to his chagrin.

These health issues persisted throughout the 2022-23 season, with his left hip preventing him from skating once more. Byron was placed on long-term injured reserve by the Canadiens on October 11.

He did not participate in the final year of his contract because of hip pain that interfered with his daily life, particularly his ability to play with his children.

Paul Byron officially announced his retirement on September 20, 2023, and will take on a player development role in the Canadiens’ front office.
