Canadian TV personality and beloved children’s entertainer, Nerene Virgin, passed away at the age of 77. According to an online obituary, she died on Monday in Burlington, Ontario, near her hometown of Hamilton.

Well-known for her contributions to TVO (TVOntario), Virgin gained prominence through her role as Jodie, the amiable display designer in the children’s series “Today’s Special,” which aired from 1981 to 1987. The show, set in a department store, became a staple of Canadian television.

A statement from Ontario’s public broadcaster on Friday highlighted Virgin’s significant impact, stating, “Nerene achieved remarkable success, captivating audiences with her versatile performances that showcased both depth and authenticity.” The statement further emphasized the lasting impression she left on those who grew up watching the show and everyone fortunate enough to work with her.

“Today’s Special” also reached audiences in the United States and was utilized in Canadian classrooms as an educational resource.

Virgin’s versatile career extended beyond the children’s series. She made appearances on TVO’s “Polka Dot Door” and CTV’s “The Littlest Hobo.” Later on, she transitioned into journalism, hosting CTV’s “Eye On Toronto” in the late ’80s and early ’90s.

The TVO statement acknowledged Virgin as a trailblazer, particularly during a time when she stood out as one of the few Black women on Canadian television. Her legacy encompasses not only her captivating performances but also her pioneering contributions to the media landscape in Canada.
