According to the hospital, he died after a “severe and prolonged illness,” having been under the constant supervision of doctors since the beginning of 2020.

Gorbachev was the longest-reigning Russian ruler in history, outliving both Alexander Kerensky and the nominal leader of the USSR, Vasily Kuznetsov, who both lived to be 89.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences, according to Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesman.

Other world leaders paid tribute to Gorbachev on Tuesday, with US President Joe Biden describing him in a statement as “a man of remarkable vision.”

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, wrote on Twitter that Gorbachev’s role in ending the Cold War “opened the way for a free Europe. This legacy is one we will not forget.”
