Mitchell contracted polio when she was nine years old and was hospitalised for several weeks. She also began smoking that year, but she denies that it has harmed her voice.

Joni’s voice was husky, sweet, high, and bell-like at times. Joni was known in her prime for her extensive mezzo-soprano voice, which was described as “pseudo-soprano” because of how she lightened her tone to sing high vocals.

The singer-songwriter suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015. This condition stilled her voice and altered it significantly.

She has released seventeen original albums, won nine Grammy Awards, and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during her 40-year career.
