Joan Hotchkis, a veteran American stage, screen and television actress, writer and performance artist has died. She was born on September 21, 1927 and breathed her last on September 27, 2022, six days after celebrating her 95th birthday.

What happened to Joan Hotchkis? Also known for her writing prowess, she became a playwright with “Legacy” in 1974, which she later adapted into a film of the same name the following year.

Shortly after production on the Legacy film was completed, Hotchkis was diagnosed with meningioma, and she had the non-cancerous brain tumor surgically removed.

How did Joan Hotchkis die? Hotchkis died from congestive heart failure, her daughter Paula Chambers confirmed in a statement.

Hotchkis was a lifetime member of the Actors Studio and the Dramatists Guild, and is perhaps, best known for;

  • Playing Dr. Nancy Cunningham for several seasons on The Odd Couple,
  • Co-writing with Eric Morris the seminal acting manual “No Acting Please” (1977), which is still used in colleges and conservatories, and
  • Her groundbreaking performance art works in the 1990s.

Throughout the 1970s, she guest-starred on series including;

  • Charlie’s Angels,
  • Mannix,
  • The New Dick Van Dyke Show,
  • St. Elsewhere,
  • Marcus Welby and Barnaby Jones

She also appeared in the films The Late Liz (1971) and Old Boyfriends (1979).

She also appeared on stage, starring in;

  • Cowboy Jack Street,
  • Madame Irma and
  • The Grace of Mary Traverse in L.A.

She also performed with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Milwaukee Repertory Theater.

She also portrayed Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie four times, twice in L.A., once in Nashville and once in Cincinnati.

In her final credited role, Hotchkis appeared as Madeleine in the 1993 TV movie “The Disappearance Of Christina.”
