Jim Gordon, a musician and songwriter from the United States attacked his 72-year-old mother, Osa Marie Gordon, with a hammer before fatally stabbing her with a butcher knife on June 3, 1983, claiming that a voice told him to do so.

Gordon was diagnosed with schizophrenia only after his arrest for murder. The court accepted that he had acute schizophrenia during his trial, but he was not allowed to use an insanity defence due to changes in California law brought about by the Insanity Defense Reform Act.

Jim Gordon was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison on July 10, 1984. He became eligible for parole for the first time in 1991, but he has been denied several times because he has never attended a parole hearing.
Jim Gordon was rediagnosed with schizophrenia in November 2017. Gordon was denied parole for the tenth time on March 7, 2018, and was tentatively scheduled to be eligible again in March 2021.
He was incarcerated at the California Medical Facility, a medical and psychiatric prison in Vacaville, California, as of 2023. Jim Gordon passed away in prison on March 13, 2023.
