Big Pokey died tragically after collapsing on stage while performing. His death was confirmed by a close source on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at age 45.

“Justice of The Peace Tom Gillam III has confirmed that Houston Rapper Milton Powell, better known as Big Pokey passed away at St. Elizabeth Hospital,” CBS affiliate KFDM reported.
He began his career in the entertainment industry with Houston producer, DJ Screw in the early ’90s, releasing songs on many of DJ Screw’s mixtapes. He was featured on Screw’s mixtape June 27th Freestyle which became a landmark album in chopped and screwed hip hop.

Big Pokey released his full-length album dubbed Hardest Pit in the Litter in 1999. In 2000, he returned with another album titled D-Game 2000, which had mid-tempo 808-driven beats featuring a lot of other Houston peers. The following year, he collaborated with Wreckshop Wolfpack for Tha Collabo and also returned in 2002 with another solo album Da Sky’s Da Limit.
