Even though he was found innocent in a later retrial, Barry George will forever be known as the man arrested for Jill Dando’s murder. George was arrested on May 25, 2000, over a year after Dando’s death, with few other leads and mounting pressure on the Metropolitan Police to find the perpetrator in the high-profile murder case.

On July 2, 2001, he was found guilty by a ten-to-one margin and sentenced to life in prison. George’s background and unusual behaviour were cited by police as evidence of his guilt. He was rumoured to live near Dando’s Fulham flat and had a history of stalking women.

George had previously been found guilty of attempted rape and indecent assault, as well as assaulting his ex-wife a few months into their brief marriage.
The gunpowder residue evidence was ruled inadmissible by the judge during his retrial in 2008 after he was told that, while it was the same type found on Dando’s body, it could have come from any source.
