Both Aherne and her brother, Patrick, were born with a rare form of cancer, leaving him blind in one eye and her virtually blind in one eye. Her mother told them they were special because they had cancer. “Mum made us so strong,” she said. Aherne spent much of her early childhood in and out of hospital.
