Michael James Owen is a retired English football striker who played for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Manchester United, and Stoke City, as well as the England national team.

Owen helped Liverpool win the League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Cup in 2000–01, ending a six-year trophy drought. In appreciation of his accomplishments that season, Owen was named European Player of the Year. He became the first Englishman to win the European Footballer of the Year title since Kevin Keegan in 1979.
Owen scored both Liverpool goals late in the 2001 FA Cup Final, rescuing the club from what appeared to be inevitable defeat.

Owen announced his retirement from playing at the end of the 2012–13 season on March 19, 2013. He made his final appearance on May 19, 2013, against Southampton, where he received a standing ovation from both sets of fans.
