Before his acting career took off, Van Damme competed in professional full-contact karate and kickboxing matches. He achieved success as a professional kickboxer with an impressive record of 18 wins (all by knockout) and only one loss. This background in real combat sports has contributed to his on-screen fighting skills and the authenticity of his performances.
