In the Bible, Gaza is mentioned as one of the ancient cities in the region known as Canaan. It is often referred to as “Gaza of the Philistines” or simply “Gaza.” The Philistines were an ancient people who settled along the Mediterranean coast of what is now modern-day Israel and the Gaza Strip during biblical times.

The name “Gaza” is derived from the Hebrew word “Azzah,” which means “strong”. Gaza is one of the oldest cities in the world and has been known by various names throughout history.

It was officially adopted by the British Mandate in 1922, which governed the region until Israel’s independence in 1948. Gaza is also one of the five chief cities of the Philistines and was conquered by Joshua (Joshua 10:41).

The city is mentioned several times in the Bible, including in Judges 16:1-3, where Samson carried away its gates, and in Jeremiah 25:20, where it is referred to as one of the cities that will be judged by God.

Gaza is mentioned in the context of the conquest of Canaan by the Israelites. In the book of Joshua, Gaza is listed as one of the cities in the region that the Israelites were to conquer.

Gaza is also mentioned in various prophetic books of the Bible, where it is often associated with judgments and pronouncements by the prophets.
