Ed was born on August 17, 1968, in Pennsylvania, United States, and played college football at Stanford University.

In 1991, he was drafted by the New York Giants as 83rd overall pick, in the third round of the NFL draft.
Ed spent three seasons with the Giants, and then moved to the San Francisco 49ers, where he played for another one season.
In 1995, the Denver Broncos signed him in, and he remained with the team for eight seasons.
Ed retired as a player in 2004, with a career record of 565 receptions, 7,422 receiving yards, 55 touchdowns, and three Superbowl championship wins.
He began his coaching career in 2018 at Valor Christian High School. In 2020, he became head coach of the Northern Colorado, but was relieved from his job in 2022.
