The Dalai Lama is the Tibetan people’s title for the spiritual leader of the Gelug or “Yellow Hat” school of Tibetan Buddhism, the newest and most dominant of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

The Dalai Lama is one of the world’s most recognisable religious figures. In addition to their spiritual leadership, Dalai Lamas have dominated Tibetan politics.

From the 17th century until China occupied Tibet in 1950, Dalai Lamas or their regents governed much of the Tibetan plateau with varying degrees of autonomy.

The Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for “advocating peaceful solutions based on tolerance and mutual respect.”

Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th and current Dalai Lama has lived in exile in McLeod Ganj, Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, where the Central Tibetan Administration is also based since following the failure of the Tibetan uprising in 1959.
