In the year 2000, Sofia Vergara was diagnosed with thyroid cancer after a doctor found a lump in her neck.

He ordered a few tests, and his suspicions were confirmed. Other symptoms she did not have included enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and a cough that was not caused by a cold.

Vergara’s thyroid gland was removed, and she underwent radioactive iodine therapy, which destroys any thyroid tissue that was not removed during surgery.

However, Vergara still needs to take medication to help her control her metabolism and replace the hormones that the gland normally produces.

As a result of her experiences with cancer, Vergara started a foundation that helps families in Colombia deal with the fallout of cancer diagnoses.

In 2007, approximately 33,550 new cases of thyroid cancer were diagnosed in the United States, with nearly two-thirds occurring in people aged 20 to 55, and mostly in women.
