At the remarkable age of 99, Captain Tom embarked on a unique challenge. He decided to walk an astonishing 100 lengths of his garden, all in the noble cause of supporting NHS Charities Together.

His goal was to raise £1,000 by the time he reached the milestone of his 100th birthday on April 30.

On the morning of Captain Tom’s 100th birthday, the total funds raised during his garden walks had already exceeded £30 million.

As the day progressed, the outpouring of support continued, and by the time the campaign concluded that evening, an astonishing sum of over £32.79 million had been raised.

The magnitude of Captain Tom’s achievement did not go unnoticed. On July 17, 2020, he was personally knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.

How long was Captain Tom in the army?

In addition to his extraordinary charity efforts, Captain Tom served in the British Army from 1940 to 1945. Upon his return to the UK, he became an instructor at the Armoured Fighting Vehicle School in Bovington, Dorset.
