Wayne Rooney responded after former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo called him “jealous” after Rooney criticised Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford during an appearance on Sky Sports on April 8 2022.

“There’s probably not a single football player on the planet who isn’t envious of Cristiano,” Rooney said. “His career, the trophies he’s won, the money he’s made… his six-pack, his body. Every player, except Lionel Messi, I believe is envious of Cristiano.”

Rooney did not mince words when discussing Ronaldo’s return to United last summer on Sky Sports, saying the club needed to focus on “younger, hungry players” and that he does not offer more than goals.

Although Ronaldo is United’s top scorer this season, Rooney holds the record – and he has spoken out against reports that Ajax head coach Erik ten Haag is close to becoming the club’s new manager, believing he is the wrong choice.
