Vaught became the center of attention after a medication error which led to the death of 75-year-old Charlene Murphey in December 2017.

Vaught and Murphey did not know each other nor had any previous interaction but are both from Sumner County.

Vaught faced homicide charges after Murphey’s death.

Vaught took responsibility for her actions immediately after and in each interview about the circumstances, with both prosecutors and defense agreeing that there was no sign of malice in her actions at the time.

However, District Attorney Glenn Funk said his review of the case that he found more than just a mistake and has stood by his decision to prosecute, even after the case became a talking point in the recent primary race for his seat.

Vaught’s prosecution has ignited debate among the medical community regarding issues with medical errors.

There are concerns over the nurse being held criminally liable in Murphey’s death, instead of the case being handled solely through regulatory boards, which is the more common practice.
