During the 1950s, Riddle’s musical prowess found a home at Capitol Records, where he served as a staff arranger. His nimble fingers danced across arrangements for some of the era’s top vocalists, including the likes of Dean Martin, Judy Garland, Rosemary Clooney, and Peggy Lee. His collaboration with Ella Fitzgerald in the late ’50s and early ’60s yielded the masterpiece “Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook” (1959), adorned with Riddle’s intricate arrangements—a gem in Fitzgerald’s celebrated ‘songbook’ albums.

However, it was the enduring partnership with Frank Sinatra that became the cornerstone of Riddle’s legacy. Over more than 25 years, Riddle and Sinatra crafted classic albums that set benchmarks in both swing and ballad genres. Riddle’s arrangements, characterized by his distinctive ‘heartbeat rhythm,’ became the pulse of an era. This rhythmic enchantment, as he described it, tapped into the natural tempo that resonates with people in their everyday movements.

Riddle’s instrumental prowess extended beyond collaborations, giving rise to hits like “Lisbon Antigua” (1956) and the iconic theme from the television series “Route 66” (1960). His creative fingerprints graced the themes of TV classics like “The Untouchables” (1959) and the scoring and conducting of series such as “Naked City” (1958–64), “Batman” (1966–68), and “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” (1967–70).

As the 1970s unfolded, Riddle embraced a new chapter, arranging three best-selling albums of standards for the remarkable Linda Ronstadt. These albums proved to be a catalyst for the revival of classic American popular music, demonstrating Riddle’s ability to transcend eras and captivate new audiences.

Riddle’s contributions weren’t confined to studios; he orchestrated the musical backdrop for the inaugural balls of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, a testament to the esteem in which he was held on the national stage.
