What did Carl Davis do?

American composer, Carl Davis was an incredible conductor and composer of symphonic works who also wrote for the ballet. He composed the dark opening music for the World at War which was made from 1973 to 1974. It was a 26-episode documentary series about the events of the Second World War.

He also co-authored the revue of Diversions and won an off-Broadway award and traveled to the Edinburgh Festival in 1961. He was later commissioned by Ned Sherrin to compose music for the original British version of That Was the Week That Was.

Davis died from a brain hemorrhage in Oxford, on August 3, 2023, at the age of 86.

We are deeply saddened to learn that conductor and composer Carl Davis CBE has died aged 86. Davis scored some of the most-loved British television dramas and won the Original Film Music BAFTA for The French Lieutenant’s Woman in 1982 as well as receiving a Special Award in 2003,” BAFTA Awards official page shared in a tribute post.
