Ari Lennox, a Grammy-nominated musician, performed at Ghana’s Afrochella music festival in 2022 and tweeted about her experience in the West African country.

“Wow, it’s a rare and good feeling to wake up every day with peace and happiness.” “I owe it all to Ghana,” she tweeted. “I’ll never forget the first time I went to a beach in Ghana and burst out crying.” It was extremely upsetting. And I didn’t feel isolated. “My heart ached/ached for my forefathers.”

The tweets were touching, vulnerable, and appeared to be uncontroversial. However, the backlash was swift. One user tweeted (and deleted) “…this woman thinks she’s from Wakanda this is too corny omg” and another asked “Are your ancestors even from Ghana?”

Ari Lennox has since deleted the tweets and handed over her social media accounts to her record label, explaining on January 10 2023, that “my heart hasn’t changed. Nobody can take the peace I felt away from me…”
