What condition does Bill Nighy have?

Bill Nighy is a well-known English actor who suffers from Dupuytren’s contracture, a hereditary condition that can cause contractures of the fingers, most commonly the ring and little fingers, depending on the severity of the condition.

Nighy’s pinky and ring fingers are curled up close together in the majority of the films he appears in.

While his audience may be perplexed, the appearance has received positive feedback from young actors who compliment the “thing” he does with his hands, he told The Guardian.

Bill Nighy developed Dupuytren’s in his early 20s but, as it does with most people, it worsened over time.

“It started in my 20s. It was alarming and I should have had an operation on them at the time, but I didn’t because I was a mess and was frightened,” he revealed to The Guardian.

In another interview, Nighy suggests that his condition has genetic roots, though the cause is unknown, according to NICE.

He tells The Northern Echo, “I inherited it from my mother’s side of the family.” “In each hand, my last two fingers are permanently bent back against the palms.”
