Robitussin is a common over-the-counter cough syrup that contains dextromethorphan, an expectorant and cough suppressant. It can help you relieve coughing, congestion, and sore throat caused by colds, flu, or allergies. However, there are some things that you should not mix with Robitussin, as they can cause serious side effects or reduce the effectiveness of the medicine.

One thing that you should not mix with Robitussin is alcohol. Alcohol can increase the risk of liver damage, drowsiness, and impaired coordination when taken with dextromethorphan. It can also worsen your dehydration and inflammation. Therefore, you should avoid drinking alcohol while taking Robitussin or any other cough medicine that contains dextromethorphan.

Another thing that you should not mix with Robitussin is other medications that contain dextromethorphan or have similar effects. For example, you should not take Robitussin with other cough syrups, cold or allergy pills, antihistamines, pain relievers, or antidepressants.

These drugs can interact with dextromethorphan and cause a dangerous condition called serotonin syndrome, which can lead to confusion, agitation, tremors, seizures, coma, and even death.  You should always check the labels of your medications and consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Robitussin with any other drugs.

Finally, you should not mix Robitussin with certain foods or drinks that can affect the absorption or metabolism of the medicine. For instance, you should not take Robitussin with grapefruit juice, as it can increase the amount of dextromethorphan in your blood and cause more side effects.

You should also avoid taking Robitussin with acidic foods or drinks, such as coffee, tea, or citrus fruits, as they can decrease the effectiveness of the medicine. You should take Robitussin with a full glass of water and follow the directions on the package or your doctor’s prescription.
