Mark Adams the Texas Tech Red Raiders men’s basketball team coach was suspended by the university on March 5, 2023, for making an alleged “inappropriate, unacceptable, and racially insensitive comment” to a player the previous week.

Mark Adams “referenced Bible verses about workers, teachers, parents, and slaves serving their masters” in an attempt to make the player more receptive to his coaching.

Kirby Hocutt, the athletic director, was made aware of the incident on Friday, March 3 2023. He issued a written reprimand to Adams before suspending him to conduct a “more thorough investigation of Adams’ interactions with his players and staff.”

Adams is well known for his defensive coaching abilities and has been named one of the country’s top defensive coaches.

In his first season as head coach, Adams led Texas Tech to a 27-10 record and the NCAA tournament, where they lost to Duke in the Sweet Sixteen. Tech finished the 2022-23 season with a 16-15 record and a ninth-place finish in the Big 12.
