What awards has Van Morrison won?

Van Morrison is an award-winning Northern Irish singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer.

Sir George Ivan Morrison OBE, known professionally as Van Morrison was born on August 31, 1945, in Belfast Bloomfield as the only child of George Morrison, a shipyard electrician, as well as Violet Stitt Morrison, who was a singer and tap dancer.

Van Morrison’s father died in 1998, while his mother Violet died in 2016. He schooled at Orangefield Boys Secondary School where he left in July 1960 with no qualifications. He rose into the spotlight in the mid-1960s as the lead singer of the Northern Irish R&B and rock band Them.

Van Morrison recorded the garage band classic “Gloria” with the band ‘Them’. He started his solo career in 1967 with the release of the hit single “Brown Eyed Girl” and later solidified himself as a major artist with Moondance (1970).

Van Morrison has had eighteen of his albums reach the top 40 in the United States, twelve of them between 1997 and 2017. He is the recipient of two Grammy Awards, the 1994 Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, and the 2017 Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting.

Van Morrison was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He was knighted for services to the music industry and to tourism in Northern Ireland in 2016. He is the father of Shana Morrison, Fionn Ivan Patrick Morrison, and Aibbe Rocca Morrison.
