  • The Tuskegee Airmen were the first three black generals in the US Air Force. The Tuskegee Airmen served as trailblazers for civil rights and racial integration.
  • The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces. They trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Tuskegee, Alabama, and flew over 15,000 individual combat missions in Europe and North Africa during World War II.
  • They were known for their skill and bravery and had impressive combat records. They escorted bombers on bombing raids, flew reconnaissance missions, and provided air support for ground troops. They were credited with destroying or damaging more than 400 enemy aircraft, and they never lost a bomber to enemy fighters while escorting one.

On 29 March 2007, the Tuskegee Airmen were collectively awarded a Congressional Gold Medal at a ceremony in the U.S. Capitol rotunda.

In 2008, the Tuskegee Airmen were inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame at the San Diego Air & Space Museum.
