After leaving the Women of Vision Awards at the city’s Ziegfeld Ballroom in a convoy that included Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, the Sussexes were pursued by photographers. The incident left the couple shaken, but no one was hurt, according to their security detail.

Police said “numerous” photographers made the Sussexes’ transportation “challenging,” but no collisions, injuries or arrests were reported. According to the couple’s account, the altercation with the photographers was lengthy and dangerous.

“Last night, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms. Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi,” the couple’s spokesperson said.

According to Thomas Buda, who runs a private security firm hired by the couple, the chase began the moment Harry and Meghan left the Ziegfeld Ballroom and lasted 90 minutes.

Buda claims the couple finally escaped when the midnight shift of patrol officers arrived in their police cars to go out on patrol, effectively creating a traffic jam on the block, allowing security teams to get Harry and Meghan into traffic and away.

The mayor of New York City, Eric Adams said the incident was “reckless” and “irresponsible.”
