After dropping out of college, Reznor got a job as an assistant engineer and janitor at Cleveland’s Right Track Studio.
“He is so focused in everything he does,” studio owner Bart Koster later said. The floor looked great after that guy waxed it.”

Reznor requested permission from Koster to record demos of his own songs for free during unused studio time. Koster agreed, noting that it only cost him “a little wear on his tape heads.”
He is now the lead vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and primary songwriter for the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, which he founded in 1988 and was the only official member until 2016.
Pretty Hate Machine (1989), the debut album by Nine Inch Nails, was a commercial and critical success. Reznor has since released 11 more studio albums as Nine Inch Nails.
