Bud Grant graduated from high school in 1945 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, during World War II. He was assigned to the Great Lakers Naval Training Station in Illinois and played on the football team coached by Paul Brown.

Using an acceptance letter from the University of Wisconsin-Madison to be discharged from the service, Grant decided to attend the University of Minnesota instead.

Grant was a three-spot, a nine-letterman athlete in football, basketball and baseball for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, earning All-Big Ten Conference honours in football twice. While at the University, Grant was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Grant was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1994. He was the first coach to guide the teams to the Grey Cup and the Super Bowl, the only other being Marv Levy.
